Brief history of the Faculty of Medicine no. 2

In 2010, by decision of the University Senate, the Faculty of Medicine no. 2 was founded, as a subdivision responsible for the management of the process of training foreign students in English and the effective implementation of all legislative and normative acts regulating the admission to studies, recording and observing the rules of stay of foreign citizens on the territory of the Republic of Moldova.

The first dean of the Faculty was the professor Mihail Gavriliuc, who contributed essentially to the institutional consolidation of the Faculty. From 2013 to the present, the Faculty is led by the dean, associate professor Mircea Betiu, assisted by a team of vice-deans: associate professors Stela Cojocaru and Sofia Lehtman, as well as university assistants Angela Babuci and Oxana Sarbu.  

The training of foreign students, over the years, was directed by the vice-rectors of the University, professors Vladimir Hotineanu, Petru Galetchi and Valeriu Chicu. In the period 1991-1999, professors Victor Vovc, Ion Moldovanu and Dr. M. Lupu were responsible for еру training of foreign students. Later, for a period of more than 10 years, the foreign students Unit was led by the professor Veceaslav Gonciar and assistants M. Lupu, Anatol Visnevschi and Lilian Globa.

 The management of foreign students at the Faculty is carried out in collaboration with the Department of Recruitment and Documentation of Foreign Citizens, led by associate professor Igor Cemortan.    

The implementation of training in English for foreign students was adopted by the University Scientific Council in 2002. With the organizational and financial support of the university, the language training of teaching staff was ensured, the didactic materials and equipment necessary for the gradual application of students’ training in English, were purchased. Starting with the 2010-2011 academic year, the number of international students admitted to study in English has increased almost 2 times at the Faculty of Dentistry and 5 times at the Faculty of Medicine no. 2.

Currently, about 2,000 international students from about 40 countries - Israel, India, Turkey, the Russian Federation, Germany, USA, Romania, Bulgaria, Jordan and others - are studying at the University in English, of which about 1,700 are trained in the Anglophone program within the Faculty of Medicine no. 2.

The primary objectives of the faculty are the training of medical personnel in accordance with European standards and the strengthening of the internationalization of the didactic process. The training of foreign students at the Faculty of Medicine no. 2 is completed by a wider framework of activities:

  • Participation of University representatives at international educational fairs to present the educational offer of Nicolae Testemitanu University of the Republic of Moldova;

  • International cooperation with organizations, economic agents, subdivisions of the Ministries of Health and Education from different countries, in order to attract candidates for studies;

  • Collaboration with the diplomatic missions of the Republic of Moldova and other countries with the aim of promoting Nicolae Testemitanu University;

  • Development of the English training environment and the communication skills of teaching staff and other categories of university personnel;

  • Organization of entrance exams, as well as promotion of Nicolae Testemitanu University in the countries of origin of study candidates (Israel, India, USA).

Since 2012, the University has been implementing the process of attesting the language skills of the teaching staff in accordance with the knowledge levels provided by the European standard. Currently, over 70% of the University's teaching staff is certified in teaching in English.

The new strategy regarding the integration of the University in the international medical academic space assigns to the Faculty of Medicine no. 2 a major importance, determined by the need to promote work experience within international structures.

Nicolae Testemitanu University was institutionally accredited at the international level according to the standards of the World Federation of Medical Education. The accreditation process was carried out by the Independent Accreditation and Rating Agency of Kazakhstan in 2019. Thus, Nicolae Testemitanu University graduation diploma, which foreign students also benefit from, reconfirms its academic value in an international perspective.     

According to the Order of the rector of Nicolae Testemitanu University no. 201-A "Regarding the approval of the organizational and functional structure of Nicolae Testemitanu University in new wording" of September 3, 2020, within the Faculty of Medicine no. 2, 16 didactic subdivisions are active: the Department of Pediatrics, 14 chairs and the Pre-University Training Center. The teaching staff of the Faculty of Medicine no. 2 includes 127 full-time employees, including 10 professors, 38 associate professors, 73 university assistants, 6 lecturers. The Department of Pediatrics, led by the professor Ninel Revenco, has become a benchmark in the educational process, implementing new forms of student training with their participation in curative activity. The staff of the Chair of Infectious, Tropical Diseases and Medical Parasitology, along with that of the Chair of Medical Emergencies, but also other subdivisions of the Faculty, are fully trained in the front line of combating the COVID-19 pandemic.

We are proud of the 4,531 foreign graduates that the University licentiated between 1994 and 2022. As a result, thousands of graduates originating from about 40 countries practice medicine in the countries of the European Union, Israel, USA, Turkey, Russia, Ukraine, etc.

Currently, the Faculty of Medicine no. 2 is trained in aligning the training process with the requirements of the World Federation of Medical Education, contributing to the prospective promotion of Nicolae Testemitanu Medicine Study Program taught in English.
